Hope in Our Afflictions
In 1945, after the horrors of World War II, Corrie Ten Boom began travelling the world sharing her story of surviving a Nazi concentration camp. She had lost her father and sister, yet her message was not bitterness; it was comfort. She would often say, “There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.”
Paul opens his second letter to the Corinthians with a similar assurance:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
2 Corinthians 1:3–4 (NKJV)
Reflection:
Life is full of trials, loss, illness, disappointments, and pain. But Paul reminds us that we do not suffer alone. God is the “Father of mercies and God of all comfort.” His comfort doesn’t always remove the trial, but it sustains us in it.
Even more, the comfort He gives us is never wasted. It equips us to minister to others who are hurting. Our deepest wounds often become the source of our greatest ministries.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for being the God of all comfort. When I am weak, You are strong. Teach me to lean on Your mercy in my trials, and use my story to encourage others who are suffering. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Receive Comfort: Take time this morning to pray honestly about your struggles and invite God’s comfort.
- Pass It On: Reach out to someone you know who is hurting and encourage them with Scripture.
- Remember the Purpose: Write down one way God has used your past trials to help others.
