Returning to What Truly Matters
A businessman once shared how he built his life around his career, striving to buy more land, build a bigger home, and gain recognition in his city. But after a sudden health crisis, he found himself asking, “What was I really building?” Lying in the hospital bed, he realized he had neglected his relationship with God and his family, and in tears, he prayed, “Lord, help me build what matters to You.”
God, through Haggai, called His people to pause and reflect:
“Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Consider your ways!’”
Haggai 1:5 (NKJV)
Reflection:
After returning from exile, the people of Israel were busy rebuilding their own houses while neglecting the house of the Lord. They worked hard, but their efforts felt empty because their priorities were out of alignment with God’s purpose.
“Consider your ways,” God says. What are you building with your life? Are your efforts centered on your comfort and personal gain, or on God’s Kingdom and purposes?
Sometimes, we find ourselves exhausted, working hard, but with little joy or spiritual fruit. Like Israel, God may be calling us to examine our priorities. When we put God first—His Word, His house, and His will—He blesses the work of our hands and fills our lives with meaning.
Tonight, pause and consider your ways. Are you building your life on what truly matters? It is never too late to return, realign, and invite God to take first place in your plans, family, and daily walk.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your call to consider my ways. Help me to see where I have misplaced my priorities and to return to building what truly matters in Your eyes. I desire to seek first Your Kingdom and trust You to take care of every need in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Spend 5 quiet minutes reflecting on your current priorities and ask God to show you areas to realign.
- Write down one action you will take to put God first in your daily routine or family life.
- Encourage your family to join you in praying for God’s purposes to be established in your home.
