Starting Right with God at the Centre
Samuel Ajayi Crowther was once a slave, captured as a boy and shipped to the Americas. But his ship was intercepted, and he was freed by the British Navy. Later, he encountered Christ, became a missionary, and eventually the first African Anglican bishop. Reflecting on his life, he often emphasised: “When God is at the beginning of a matter, its end will surely bring glory to Him.”
Genesis opens with the same powerful declaration:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1 (NKJV)
Reflection:
The Bible begins not with man, but with God. Everything starts with Him—our lives, our purpose, and our destiny. Samuel Ajayi Crowther’s life reminds us that even a beginning in slavery can be rewritten by God into a story of freedom and impact when God is at the centre.
If God is not in your beginning, whether it’s your day, your plans, or your decisions, you risk building on sand. But when He is, everything is secure.
Prayer:
Father, I thank You that You are the beginning of all things. Teach me to put You first in my life, my family, and my work. May every beginning in my life bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Start with God: Begin tomorrow with prayer before any other activity.
- Reflect: Where have you been starting without God? Invite Him in today.
- Encourage: Share Genesis 1:1 with someone as a reminder to put God first.
