Evang Ps. Kenneth Nandoha
But someone will say, ‘You have faith, and I have works.’ Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works, faith was made perfect?
James 2:18-22
The Inseparability of Faith and Works:
James addresses the inseparable connection between faith and works. He challenges the notion of claiming faith without accompanying actions. True faith, according to James, is demonstrated through tangible works. In essence, our actions should be the living proof of our faith.
Faith Beyond Mere Belief:
James offers a vivid illustration – even demons believe in the existence of God, yet their belief doesn’t lead to salvation. Faith, for James, is not merely intellectual acknowledgment; it’s a living, transformative force that compels us to align our actions with our professed beliefs. Mere belief, devoid of action, lacks the vitality that characterizes genuine faith.
The Example of Abraham:
To drive home his point, James refers to the example of Abraham. Abraham’s faith was not passive; it prompted him to take tangible actions, such as offering his son Isaac on the altar. In this act of obedience, Abraham’s faith and works were intertwined, illustrating the dynamic relationship between genuine faith and corresponding actions. James contends that Abraham’s faith was perfected, made complete, through his obedient works.
Today’s Blessings:
Heavenly Father, I come before You acknowledging that true faith is not a passive belief but a vibrant force that prompts me to live in accordance with Your will. Help me to align my beliefs with actions, demonstrating my faith through deeds of love and obedience. May my life be a testament to the transformative power of genuine faith, following the example of Abraham. Strengthen me, Lord, to live out my faith daily. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
