Staying Awake in a Sleeping World
A young boy once waited for his father to return from a long journey. Every day, he would sweep the compound, arrange the chairs, and keep watch on the road, ready to run and embrace his father when he arrived. When asked why he waited so eagerly, he said, “Because I don’t want to miss him when he comes.”
Paul encouraged believers with these words:
“Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.”
1 Thessalonians 5:6 (NKJV)
Reflection:
We live in a world that is spiritually asleep—busy with entertainment, chasing wealth, and consumed with temporary pleasures while ignoring eternity. Yet, as believers, we are called to live ready for the return of Jesus Christ.
Paul reminds us to be sober, watchful, and awake. This means living each day with eternity in mind, aligning our choices, conversations, and actions with God’s Word.
Living ready does not mean living in fear of His coming; it means living in faithfulness, readiness, and purpose. Jesus could return at any moment, and the joy of a prepared heart is the confidence of seeing Him face-to-face without regret.
Are you living ready today? Are your priorities aligned with God’s priorities, or have distractions dulled your spiritual alertness?
Today, renew your focus on eternity, walk in obedience, and encourage others to prepare for the glorious return of our Lord.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for the promise of Your return. Help me to live awake and ready, not distracted by the world, but focused on Your calling for my life. Fill me with Your Spirit to walk in holiness and share Your hope with others as I wait for Your glorious appearing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Take 10 minutes to reflect on areas where you have become spiritually sleepy. Repent and realign your focus on Christ.
- Share 1 Thessalonians 5:6 with a friend to encourage them to live ready for Jesus’ return.
- Begin your day with the mindset: “How can I live in a way that honors Jesus today?”
