Consider Your Ways

God First, Always

In 1985, a successful businessman had everything he thought he wanted, wealth, influence, recognition. Yet he felt hollow. One night, as he sat alone in his high-rise office, he opened a dusty Bible from his childhood. His eyes fell on the words: “Seek first the kingdom of God.” That verse pierced his soul. From that night on, he began living not to build his empire, but to build God’s. His business didn’t vanish, but his priorities were forever changed.

The prophet Haggai brought a similar message to a distracted people:

“Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Consider your ways!’”
Haggai 1:5 (NKJV)

Reflection:

The people of Judah had returned from exile and started rebuilding the temple, but then they stopped. Life got busy. They focused on their own homes, their own comfort, and slowly forgot the mission. God, through Haggai, didn’t condemn them, but He called them to pause and reflect: “Consider your ways.”

It’s a gentle but urgent wake-up call. Where is your time going? Your energy? Your heart?

When we prioritize everything but God, even our good efforts feel empty. But when we put Him first, whether in our work, family, finances, or dreams, He brings purpose and blessing.

You don’t need to quit your job or abandon your responsibilities. But maybe you need to realign your focus.

Prayer:

Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve put other things before You. Help me to consider my ways and return to You with all my heart. Be first in my priorities, first in my time, first in my plans. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. Pause to Reflect: Tonight, take 10 minutes in silence and ask: Am I putting God first in every area of my life?
  2. Rebuild the Altar: Choose one area where God has been second, and commit to making Him first again.
  3. Seek First: Read Matthew 6:33 before bed and let it reframe how you plan your tomorrow.
