The Transforming Power of the Gospel
In the 1700s, John Newton, once a slave trader, encountered the grace of God and became a preacher of the Gospel. His life was radically transformed, and he penned the hymn “Amazing Grace.” He often said, “I am not what I ought to be, but by the grace of God, I am what I am.”
Paul wrote to Philemon about a man named Onesimus, a runaway slave who had met Christ through Paul’s ministry.
“No longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.”
Philemon 1:16 (NKJV)
Reflection:
The Gospel changes relationships. In Christ, social barriers are broken, forgiveness is possible, and enemies can become family. Onesimus was once useless to Philemon, but through Christ, he became useful and beloved.
When Jesus transforms our hearts, He also transforms the way we see others. People we once avoided, mistrusted, or resented can become brothers and sisters in the Lord.
This is the radical nature of grace; it doesn’t just save us; it reconciles us.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for reconciling me to God and to others. Help me to see people not as the world sees them, but as You see them, in the light of the cross. Teach me to forgive, restore, and embrace as You have done for me. In Your name, Amen.
Challenge:
- List One Broken Relationship: Pray specifically for God to bring healing and restoration.
- Reach Out: Send a message of encouragement or forgiveness to someone you’ve been distant from.
- Remember the Cross: Keep Christ’s forgiveness toward you at the forefront of how you treat others.
