God is Our Refuge

Finding Shelter in His Presence

During World War II, a family in London would run to a small underground shelter every time the air raid sirens went off. The bombings were loud, and fear filled the streets, but inside that small shelter, they felt safe. Years later, one of the children who grew up in that home said, “That shelter was our refuge, but now, God is my refuge in every storm of life.”

David declared confidently:

“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1 (NKJV)

Reflection:

Life often brings storms we did not expect sickness, loss, betrayal, or sudden changes that shake our world. In such moments, it is easy to feel alone, fearful, and overwhelmed.

Yet, God is not far; He is “a very present help in trouble.” This means that in your darkest hour, God is there with you. He is your refuge—a safe place to run when life is too heavy to bear alone. He is your strength when you feel weak, and your shield when you feel attacked.

The psalmist continues in Psalm 46, reminding us that even if the mountains fall into the sea, we need not fear because God is with us. The same God who calmed the storm can calm your heart tonight.

Before you sleep, tell God what is weighing on your heart. Rest in the truth that He is your refuge, your place of peace, your security when everything else feels uncertain.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are my refuge and strength. Tonight, I bring before You every burden, fear, and worry I have carried. I trust in Your presence to be my comfort and my shelter in every storm. Help me to rest in Your promises, knowing You are with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. Write down the burdens or fears you are carrying tonight, and pray over them, giving them to God.
  2. Meditate on Psalm 46 before sleeping, focusing on God’s presence and peace.
  3. Share this truth with a friend or family member who may be facing a difficult season.
