Finding Purpose in Life’s Storms
In 1967, a young woman named Joni Eareckson Tada was paralyzed from the shoulders down after a diving accident. At first, she wrestled with despair and hopelessness. But over time, she discovered that her suffering became a platform to glorify Christ. She later wrote, “The weaker I am, the harder I must lean on God’s grace. The stronger I discover Him to be.”
James echoes this truth when he writes to scattered believers facing hardship:
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
James 1:2–3 (NKJV)
Reflection:
Trials are never easy. Our natural response is to avoid them or pray them away. But James teaches us to see trials through the lens of eternity. They are not obstacles meant to destroy us, but opportunities meant to shape us.
Faith that is never tested cannot grow strong. Just as fire refines gold, trials refine our faith—burning away impurities and producing endurance.
We may not rejoice in the trial itself, but we can rejoice in the God who is working through it. With Him, our pain is never wasted.
Prayer:
Lord, give me the grace to face my trials with faith. Help me to see them not as punishment, but as preparation. Teach me to trust You in every season, and to find joy in knowing that You are making me more like Christ. Amen.
Challenge:
- List a Trial: Write down a difficulty you are currently facing.
- Shift Your View: Ask God to show you how He may be using it to grow your faith.
- Encourage Another: Share James 1:2–3 with someone walking through hardship today.
