The Author and Finisher of Our Faith
In 1954, two runners, Roger Bannister of England and John Landy of Australia, competed in what was called “The Miracle Mile.” Landy led most of the race, but in the final stretch, he glanced over his shoulder to check on Bannister. That moment of distraction cost him the race, as Bannister surged past to victory. Landy later admitted, “If I hadn’t looked back, I might have won.”
The writer of Hebrews gives us the same spiritual reminder:
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV)
Reflection:
The Christian life is often compared to a race. But the focus is not on speed or strength—it’s on endurance and direction. The only way to run faithfully is by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.
When we look back at past failures or sideways at others, we stumble. But when we look to Christ, our example, our strength, and our goal, we find the endurance to keep going.
Jesus endured the cross because His eyes were set on the joy of our salvation. If He could endure such suffering for us, surely we can keep running with our gaze on Him.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to keep my eyes on You. In my race of faith, when I grow weary or distracted, remind me that You are both my strength and my finish line. Give me grace to run with endurance today. Amen.
Challenge:
- Identify Distractions: What’s pulling your focus away from Christ? Name it, and ask God to help you refocus.
- Set Your Eyes on Jesus: Begin your day by reading a verse about Christ and meditating on Him.
- Encourage Another Runner: Send a word of encouragement to a fellow believer to keep going in their race.
