Not by Might, Nor by Power

Depending on God’s Spirit

A pastor once shared how he spent years trying to grow his church through endless programs, personal efforts, and constant busyness. Yet, despite his hard work, he felt empty and burnt out. One evening, kneeling beside his bed, he cried out to God, “Lord, I can’t do this anymore.” In that moment, he sensed God whisper, “That’s where I wanted you—to realize it’s not by your might, but by My Spirit.”

God’s word to Zerubbabel still speaks powerfully to us today:

“‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts.”
Zechariah 4:6 (NKJV)

Reflection:

The people of Israel faced an overwhelming task: rebuilding the temple in the midst of opposition and limited resources. Zerubbabel, as their leader, likely felt the weight of responsibility and the fear of failure.

In our lives, we often face mountains—challenges in ministry, family, finances, or personal struggles—that feel impossible to move. We try to use our strength, connections, and strategies to solve problems, but we end up exhausted and discouraged.

God reminds us that true victory and lasting impact come not by human strength or wisdom, but by the power of the Holy Spirit. When we surrender our plans, trust God fully, and allow the Holy Spirit to work through us, He accomplishes what we cannot in our own strength.

This evening, as you prepare to rest, lay down your burdens before God. Trust that He is working, even when you don’t see progress. Allow His Spirit to fill you with fresh strength, guidance, and peace.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that it is not by my might or power, but by Your Spirit that Your work is accomplished. Forgive me for the times I have tried to do things in my own strength. Tonight, I surrender my plans and challenges to You. Fill me with Your Spirit and guide me to walk in Your strength and wisdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. Identify one area of your life where you have been relying on your own strength and surrender it to God tonight.
  2. Pray specifically for the Holy Spirit to guide and empower you for tomorrow’s tasks.
  3. Meditate on Zechariah 4:6 before you sleep, declaring your dependence on God’s Spirit.
