When Jesus Speaks, Winds Obey
In 1871, Horatio Spafford lost his son to illness, then all his financial investments in the Great Chicago Fire. As he tried to recover, his wife and four daughters sailed ahead to Europe. The ship sank. Only his wife survived. Yet while sailing to meet her, Spafford penned the words: “It is well with my soul.”
Where does such peace come from? From Jesus, the One who calms storms.
“Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Peace, be still!’ And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.”
Mark 4:39 (NKJV)
Reflection:
Life often feels like a storm, with unexpected diagnoses, financial pressure, and broken relationships. Like the disciples, we cry, “Lord, don’t You care that we’re perishing?”
But Jesus does care. He’s not absent in the storm; He’s present in it. And when He speaks, chaos turns to calm.
Jesus doesn’t always calm the storm outside immediately, but He always brings peace inside when we trust Him. His voice still says today, “Peace, be still.”
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that You are with me in every storm. Speak peace over my heart today. Help me to trust You when life feels uncertain. You are my calm in chaos, my anchor in every wave. In Your name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Name your storm: Write down what is troubling you today.
- Invite Jesus in: Pray and ask Him to bring peace—not just to the situation, but to your heart.
- Encourage someone: Share Mark 4:39 with someone facing a storm today.
