A Wake-Up Call for the Heart
A lighthouse keeper once neglected to trim the flame. On a stormy night, the light flickered out, and a ship was lost on the rocks below. When asked how it happened, the man wept, “I never meant for anyone to get hurt. I just grew careless.”
Sometimes, we live as though we have all the time in the world, forgetting the urgency of eternity. The prophet Amos gives us this sobering reminder:
“Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”

Reflection:
The book of Amos is not comfortable reading. It’s a trumpet blast to a complacent people. God had blessed Israel, warned them, disciplined them, and still, they would not return. So Amos delivers this chilling call: “Prepare to meet your God.”
This is not a threat; it’s a loving warning. Like a parent calling a wayward child home before it’s too late, God uses the prophet to shake Israel from spiritual sleep.
Are there areas of your life where you’ve grown spiritually careless? Have the flickers of compromise dimmed your spiritual light? This is a holy call, not to fear, but to readiness. Christ will return. Our lives will end. Either way, we must be prepared.
Prayer:
Holy God, search my heart. Show me any area where I’ve grown cold, complacent, or careless. Help me to live each day prepared to meet You, with a clean heart, a yielded life, and a watchful spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Self-examination: Spend 10 quiet minutes asking God to reveal any hidden sin or area of neglect.
- Confess and commit: Write down what He shows you and bring it to Him in repentance.
- Encourage readiness: Gently remind a friend or family member to live prepared for Christ’s return.
