Rise and Build

Restoring What Is Broken

In 1945, after World War II, much of Europe lay in ruins. Cities like Warsaw and Berlin were reduced to rubble. Yet, amidst the devastation, ordinary men and women rolled up their sleeves and began to rebuild, brick by brick, street by street, believing that life could rise again from the ashes.

This mirrors the story of Nehemiah, who returned to a broken Jerusalem with one burning vision: restoration.

“Then I said to them, ‘You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come and let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a reproach.’ So they said, ‘Let us rise up and build.’ Then they set their hands to this good work.”
Nehemiah 2:17–18 (NKJV)

Reflection:

The walls of Jerusalem were more than stone; they represented safety, identity, and honour. Their ruins symbolised defeat, but rebuilding them declared hope.

In our lives, walls sometimes crumble too. Broken trust. Shattered dreams. Spiritual neglect. Like Nehemiah, God calls us not to sit in despair but to rise and build.

Restoration is never easy. Nehemiah faced opposition, discouragement, and fatigue. Yet with prayer and persistence, the walls went up. The same God who helped Nehemiah rebuild Jerusalem will help you restore what’s broken in your life.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You that You are a God of restoration. When I feel surrounded by ruins, give me courage to rise and build again. Strengthen my hands for the work, fill me with perseverance, and let my rebuilding bring glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. Identify Ruins: Acknowledge one “broken wall” in your life that needs rebuilding.
  2. Commit to Prayer: Like Nehemiah, start with prayer before action. Ask God for wisdom and strength.
  3. Take a Step: Do one practical thing tomorrow to begin the process of restoration.
