Passing the Mantle of Faith
In 1873, a young evangelist named Dwight L. Moody was invited to preach in England. He wasn’t highly educated, and some mocked his simple style. But God’s Spirit moved powerfully through him. After one of his sermons, a young man named Henry Drummond was so stirred that he later became a great preacher and author. Moody’s simple faith sparked fire in others, and the mantle of ministry was passed on.
This echoes the moment Elijah passed his prophetic mantle to Elisha:
“And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?’ Elisha said, ‘Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.’”
2 Kings 2:9 (NKJV)
Reflection:
Elisha didn’t ask for fame, wealth, or comfort. He asked for spiritual power, to continue the work of God through Elijah’s prophetic ministry. And God honored his request.
Every believer is called to leave a spiritual legacy. Your children, friends, coworkers, or neighbors are watching. What mantle are you passing on? Is it one of fear and worry, or one of faith and prayer?
Just as Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak, someone will one day pick up after you. May they find faith worth following.
Prayer:
Father, I ask not for worldly success, but for a double portion of Your Spirit. Help me to walk faithfully so that others who come after me may find strength and encouragement in my example. Let my life pass on faith, not fear; hope, not despair. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

- Identify Your Mantle: What spiritual legacy are you leaving for those closest to you? Write it down.
- Pray for the Next Generation: Ask God to bless and empower your children, family, or church youth with a double portion of His Spirit.
- Be an Example: This week, live in such a way that others are drawn closer to Christ by watching you.
