Finding Calm in the Midst of Fear
During World War II, a young soldier carried a small pocket Bible into battle. In the trenches, surrounded by chaos, he would read Psalm 23 and whisper, “The Lord is my Shepherd… I will not be afraid.” Though bombs exploded and fear loomed, the soldier later testified, “His Word was my peace.”
Gideon, in the time of the Judges, also found peace in an unlikely moment.
“So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.”
Judges 6:24 (NKJV)
Reflection:
Gideon lived in days of oppression. Israel was hiding in fear from the Midianites. Yet when God appeared to him and promised victory, Gideon’s response was to worship and name the place The Lord Is Peace (Jehovah Shalom).
Peace is not the absence of trouble; it is the presence of God in the midst of it. We can face uncertainty, hardship, or even danger, and still have an inner calm when we trust that the Lord is with us.
When fear rises, remember that peace is a Person, Jesus Christ, who promised, “I am with you always.”
Prayer:
Lord, You are my peace in the storm. When fear surrounds me, help me to trust in Your presence and promises. Teach me to rest, knowing that You are in control. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Name Your Fear: Write it down and lay it before God in prayer tonight.
- Speak His Name: Whisper “The Lord is Peace” when anxiety tries to overwhelm you.
- Share Peace: Encourage someone else who is going through a fearful situation.
