The Singing God

Joy in the Midst of Judgment

Corrie ten Boom, who survived the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp, once told the story of how she and her sister Betsie led secret Bible studies in their barracks. Amidst lice, hunger, and cruelty, they read Scripture aloud. One night, Corrie whispered, “Betsie, how can we rejoice here?” Betsie smiled faintly and said, “Because even here, God is rejoicing over us.”

That truth echoes from the pages of Zephaniah, a prophet known for warning of judgment, but also revealing one of the most tender images of God in Scripture:

“The Lord your God in your midst,
The Mighty One, will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Zephaniah 3:17 (NKJV)

Reflection:

Zephaniah’s world was collapsing. Idolatry, injustice, and invasion loomed. Yet amid the warning of judgment, God gives this astonishing promise: He is with you. He saves you. And He sings over you.

Let that sink in, God sings over His children. He’s not a cold observer of your pain or a distant ruler waiting for your perfection. He is a Father who rejoices over you even when your life feels like it’s in ruins.

Maybe you’ve had a day full of burdens or a season full of sorrow. Maybe you’re wondering if God is even near. But Zephaniah reminds us: God is not just near, He is in your midst. And He delights in you.

Prayer:

Father God, thank You for being near, even when I feel alone. Thank You for rejoicing over me, not because I’m perfect, but because I am Yours. Quiet my anxious heart tonight with Your love, and let me rest in the song You sing over me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. Receive God’s Delight: Tonight, sit in stillness for five minutes and imagine God singing over you. Not because of what you’ve done, but because of who He is.
  2. Silence the Noise: Turn off your phone, music, and distractions for a moment this evening. Let His love quiet your heart.
  3. Sing Back: End your night by singing or playing a worship song, even a simple chorus, to return joy to the One who rejoices over you.
