God’s Refuge in Times of Loss
In 1988, a wildfire swept through Yellowstone National Park. Afterward, forest rangers found the charred body of a mother bird at the base of a tree. When they moved her remains, they discovered her chicks alive underneath her wings. She had given her life to save them.
Ruth, a widowed foreigner in Bethlehem, also found protection, not under a bird’s wings, but under the wings of the God of Israel.
“The Lord repay your work, and a full reward be given you by the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.”
Ruth 2:12 (NKJV)
Reflection:
Ruth had lost her husband, her homeland, and her future seemed uncertain. Yet she chose to trust in the God of Naomi. In the midst of her loss, she found refuge in Him.
Like Ruth, we all face seasons of grief, emptiness, or uncertainty. But God’s wings are wide enough to cover us. His protection, provision, and presence are available to all who come to Him in faith.
Your losses don’t define you, His love does. Ruth entered Bethlehem as a poor widow but became part of the lineage of Jesus Christ. That’s the transforming power of refuge in God.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my refuge in times of trouble. When I feel vulnerable or lost, help me to rest under Your wings of love and protection. May my trust in You bring me peace and hope. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Identify a Loss: Acknowledge an area where you’ve felt the sting of loss or emptiness.
- Pray for Refuge: Ask God to cover you with His wings in that situation.
- Offer Hope: Reach out to someone else walking through loss and remind them of God’s protection.
