Yet I Will Rejoice

Trusting God in Troubled Times

During the Great Depression, a Christian farmer in the Midwest lost nearly everything, his crops failed, his livestock died, and eventually he was forced to sell his land. One evening, while looking over the barren fields, his son asked, “Papa, are we going to be okay?” The old man put his arm around the boy and said, “Son, God was good when the fields were full, and He’s still good now. We will praise Him, no matter what.”

The prophet Habakkuk came to a similar conclusion in a time of national turmoil:

“Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines;
Though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food;
Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls,
Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”

Habakkuk 3:17–18 (NKJV)

Reflection:

Habakkuk lived in uncertain times. Judah was facing judgment, injustice was rampant, and fear gripped the nation. Yet in the closing verses of his prophecy, he declares an unwavering trust in God. Not because the circumstances had changed, but because he remembered who God is.

What happens when the job is lost? When the diagnosis is serious? When prayers seem unanswered? That’s when true faith speaks loudest—not in denial of pain, but in defiant hope: “Yet I will rejoice.”

This is not shallow optimism, it’s deep, rooted worship. Habakkuk teaches us that even when life doesn’t make sense, we can still choose joy. Not because everything is right, but because God is still righteous.

Prayer:

Father God, even when my life feels empty or uncertain, I choose to rejoice in You. Teach me to trust You in every season, whether full or barren. Remind me that You are my salvation and strength. Let my joy be rooted not in what I have, but in who You are. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. List the “Thoughs”: Write down the things that feel like losses or unanswered questions in your life today.
  2. Declare Your “Yet”: In prayer, speak your own version of “Yet I will rejoice”, out loud or in writing.
  3. Worship in the Waiting: Play a worship song tonight and praise God not for what He’s done, but simply for who He is.
