The Fall of Pride

When God Brings Down the High Places

Years ago, the Titanic was declared “unsinkable” by its creators a marvel of human engineering and pride. But one iceberg changed everything. The ship that “even God couldn’t sink” rests at the bottom of the ocean, a quiet reminder that no height of human arrogance can stand against divine truth.

The prophet Obadiah declares a similar warning to Edom, a nation that trusted in its strength and lofty dwellings:

“The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock… Though you ascend as high as the eagle… I will bring you down,” says the Lord.”
Obadiah 1:3–4 (NKJV)

Reflection:

Pride has a way of convincing us that we’re invincible, that we don’t need help, that we can build our own towers of success and independence. But God, in love and justice, resists the proud and humbles them not to destroy, but to redeem.

Edom trusted in its military power, mountainous dwellings, and alliances. But none of it could protect them from the judgment of God. Pride blinded them to their need for repentance.

In our own lives, pride can creep in subtly: the belief that we don’t need God’s help, that our talents or possessions are our own doing, that we are above correction. But the Lord calls us to humility, because only in humility can grace be received.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, search my heart and remove every trace of pride. Help me not to trust in my own strength or wisdom but in You alone. Teach me to walk humbly before You, that I may always stay in the shadow of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. Reflect: Ask God to reveal areas of pride in your heart or actions.
  2. Repent: Confess any self-reliance or spiritual arrogance to the Lord.
  3. Respond: Practice humility by serving someone this evening whether in your home, church, or neighborhood.
