Running From God

The Unrelenting Mercy That Pursues Us

A young man once shared his testimony about growing up in church but walking away from God in his twenties. He tried to drown out the conviction with parties, travel, and distractions, but peace eluded him. One night, he broke down and prayed, “God, if You still want me, I’m Yours.” That same week, he encountered an old friend who led him back to Christ. He realized he hadn’t been running alone God had been running after him.

This echoes the story of Jonah:

“But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord… But the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea…”
Jonah 1:3-4a (NKJV)

Reflection:

Jonah tried to escape God’s call, but he couldn’t outrun grace. When we run from God’s will, we find ourselves in storms not because God is angry, but because He loves us too much to leave us alone.

God’s pursuit of Jonah was not for punishment but for purpose. The same is true for us. No matter how far you’ve gone, His mercy is greater still. He sends waves, winds, and even whales to get our attention—not to destroy us, but to bring us back to Him.

Maybe you’ve been resisting God’s direction in some area of your life. Like Jonah, you might be sailing in the opposite direction of your calling. But God’s love always finds us. And when we turn around, we find He’s been waiting the whole time.

Prayer:

Lord, I confess that at times I have resisted Your will and gone my own way. Thank You for pursuing me with grace even in my rebellion. Help me surrender fully and walk in the calling You’ve given me. I return to You tonight with an open heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. Reflect: Ask yourself if there’s any area in your life where you’re resisting God’s call.
  2. Repent: Talk to God openly about it and surrender that area to Him.
  3. Respond: Take one step this week in obedience to what God is asking of you.
