Finishing Well
In 1993, an elderly pastor lay in a hospital bed after decades of ministry in a small rural town. His congregation gathered to pray for him, but he told them, “Don’t weep for me, I’m going home, and my crown is waiting.” His words carried the same confidence the Apostle Paul expressed at the end of his life.
Paul wrote:
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”
2 Timothy 4:7–8 (NKJV)
Reflection:
The Christian life is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. There will be battles to fight, races to run, and faith to guard. Paul didn’t claim to have lived perfectly, but he did say he finished faithfully.
The “crown of righteousness” is not just for apostles or pastors, it’s for every believer who longs for Christ’s return and lives in anticipation of it.
One day, the applause of heaven will replace the applause of people, and the righteous Judge Himself will reward His faithful servants.
Prayer:
Lord, give me strength to keep running my race faithfully. Help me to fight my battles with courage and hold fast to my faith until the end. Let my eyes stay fixed on the crown that You have promised. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Check Your Course: Reflect on whether you’re running your race faithfully and make any needed adjustments.
- Stay Fueled: Read one chapter of Scripture today to strengthen your spiritual endurance.
- Encourage a Runner: Remind another believer to keep going because the crown is worth it.
