Rebuilding What Was Broken

Restoration Through Obedience

After a devastating hurricane hit a small town, many homes and businesses were destroyed. One community leader encouraged the residents: “We may be broken now, but step by step, together, we will rebuild stronger than before.” Indeed, they worked tirelessly, and in time, the town thrived again.

The Israelites faced a similar challenge after returning from Babylonian exile. They were called to rebuild the temple of God:

“Then the heads of the fathers’ houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and Levites, arose and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. They set the altar on its bases, for they were afraid of the peoples of the lands, and offered burnt offerings on it to the Lord, burnt offerings morning and evening.”
Ezra 3:2–3 (NKJV)

Reflection:

Restoration often begins with obedience. The Israelites didn’t start by rebuilding the temple walls or roof—they first rebuilt the altar, returning to worship God. Their example shows that spiritual priorities must come before physical or material reconstruction.

Life may leave us feeling broken—through loss, failure, or disappointment. Yet God invites us to rebuild our lives starting with Him: prayer, worship, and obedience. When God is at the center, every restoration carries His blessing.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to rebuild what has been broken in my life—relationships, faith, or dreams—starting with You. Give me courage to obey, humility to follow Your guidance, and perseverance to see Your restoration come to completion. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. Start With God: Identify one area of your life that feels broken and dedicate it to God in prayer tonight.
  2. Take Action: List small steps you can take tomorrow toward restoration or improvement.
  3. Encourage Others: Share a testimony of God’s restoration with someone who needs hope.
