The Call to Discipleship
Years ago, a successful businessman was asked how he left his thriving career to serve as a missionary in Africa. His answer was simple: “When Jesus called, I couldn’t stay. His ‘Follow Me’ was louder than every other voice in my life.”
This same call echoes through the Gospel of Mark:
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed Him.”
Mark 1:17–18 (NKJV)
Reflection:
The first disciples were ordinary fishermen. They weren’t scholars, priests, or leaders. Yet when Jesus called, they dropped their nets and followed Him, without hesitation.
Following Jesus means more than believing in Him; it means surrendering our plans, our comforts, and our priorities to His call. The Lord does not just save us; He transforms us into people who impact others for eternity.
Maybe God is calling you today, not necessarily to leave your job, but to follow Him more closely. To trust Him in your decisions. To serve Him in your home, workplace, or community. His call is still the same: “Follow Me.”
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to follow You. Help me to lay aside anything that keeps me from walking faithfully with You. Teach me to be a fisher of men, bringing hope and salvation to those around me. In Your name I pray, Amen.
Challenge:
- Identify Your Nets: Write down what might be holding you back from fully following Christ.
- Take a Step: Choose one action today that demonstrates your obedience to His call.
- Invite Someone: Share the good news of Jesus with one person in your circle this week.
