The God Who Answers by Fire
In the 1940s, during one of Billy Graham’s early tent meetings, a local pastor prayed with tears: “Lord, if You don’t show up tonight, all our efforts are in vain.” That evening, the Spirit of God moved powerfully, and many gave their lives to Christ. Billy later said, “It wasn’t our preaching, it was God’s fire falling.”
This reminds us of the day Elijah stood against the prophets of Baal:
“Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.”
1 Kings 18:38 (NKJV)
Reflection:
Mount Carmel was not just about Elijah’s courage, it was about God’s power. Israel had drifted into idolatry, wavering between Baal and the Lord. Elijah prayed, and God answered with fire to prove He alone is God.
We, too, live in a world of divided hearts and competing idols. Success, money, pleasure, and power often take God’s place. But the God who answered Elijah by fire is the same God who wants to set our hearts ablaze today.
When God’s fire falls, doubt is consumed, idols are exposed, and faith is revived. All He asks is that we rebuild the altar of surrender and call upon His name.
Prayer:
Lord God, send Your fire upon my heart. Burn away every idol and every distraction. Let my life testify that You alone are God. Rekindle my faith and draw others to Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge:
- Rebuild Your Altar: Spend 10 quiet minutes tonight in surrender, asking God to reveal and remove idols in your life.
- Pray for Fire: Ask God to ignite fresh passion for Him in your family, church, or community.
- Testify Boldly: Share with someone tomorrow how God has shown Himself faithful in your life.
