Walking in Truth and Love

The Mark of True Discipleship

In 1989, when the Berlin Wall finally came down, families who had been separated for decades were reunited. Some wept, others embraced, but what struck many was the joy of people singing hymns together across the ruins of the wall. Love had triumphed over division, and truth had prevailed over lies.

The Apostle John, writing to the “elect lady and her children,” emphasized this very combination: truth and love. For a Christian, one cannot exist without the other.

“I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another.”
2 John 1:4–5 (NKJV)

Reflection:

Truth without love becomes harsh. Love without truth becomes shallow. But when truth and love walk together, they reflect the very heart of Christ.

John celebrates believers who are “walking in truth” living faithfully according to God’s Word. Yet he quickly reminds them that truth must always be accompanied by love. A Christian who clings to truth but neglects love becomes judgmental; a Christian who loves without truth becomes compromising.

Are you walking today in both? Do your words reflect truth but flow through love? Do your actions reveal love but stay anchored in truth? This balance is the evidence of genuine discipleship.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me perfect truth and perfect love. Teach me to walk daily in both never compromising Your Word, and never withholding Your love. Let my life be a testimony of Your grace. In Your name I pray, Amen.

Challenge:

  1. Truth Check: Ask yourself am I living by God’s Word daily, not just hearing it?
  2. Love Test: Show kindness today to someone difficult in your life, it’s love in action.
  3. Balance Prayer: Pray for one area where you lean too much toward truth or too much toward love, asking God to bring balance.
